Our Mission: To Protect Nature, Public Lands, and the Outdoors

To protect, restore, and expand the National Conservation Lands through education, advocacy and partnerships.

We’re working to protect more of the 250 million acres of public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management, 85% of which are currently unprotected.
We were founded on the belief that America’s public lands are best protected through the enduring dedication of local communities – our Friends Grassroots Network.

For more than 18 years, we’ve been harnessing a national movement to secure protections through presidential administrations, Congress, and federal agencies.
We grow and mobilize community passion.
Through grant giving and capacity building, we power 80+ local organizations in our Friends Grassroots Network to advocate for National Conservation Lands.
We secure protections and improve policies.
We work directly with presidential administrations, Congress, and the Bureau of Land Management to advance better land management policies.
We increase public support.
We generate greater visibility and funding for enduring protections, with the understanding that public lands can unify and connect our common values.
Our Values
Public lands as a source, not a resource.
Everything we do is based on the understanding that we live in an interrelationship with nature and that connection to the land is the source of life, not a resource to extract.
This movement must be inclusive.
We’re committed to removing barriers to access and building toward ever greater social justice and inclusion in our own work and in the world. Learn more.
Honor local passion and wisdom.
We believe that community-led conservation is the blueprint for achieving long-lasting protections for critical public lands.
Find and share joy in the work.
We celebrate with good humor and recognize that there is always beauty, restoration and wellness to be found in our connection with each other and the land.
