These places are a part of American heritage and define the Western US. Resource extraction projects create only temporary value and often leave a wake of destruction with taxpayers on the hook for the cleanup bill. As more Americans come to understand the value of these iconic places as part of the true wealth of our country, their value will only increase over time and it would be a tragedy for them to be sold off to corporations for a few bucks today.
