Nicholas (Nick) Mills is the Public Lands Policy Associate Director for the Conservation Lands Foundation and is based in Bend, Oregon. Originally from Missoula, Montana, he grew up exploring the region’s vast public lands through outdoor pursuits such as skiing, whitewater kayaking, and backpacking. His upbringing and interest in politics led him to the University of Montana, where he earned a B.S. in Wildlife Biology and a Master’s in Public Administration.

Nick is particularly interested in the intersection of science and policy, focusing on how the regulatory process can drive equitable, resilient conservation outcomes. Before joining CLF, he gained field and policy experience through internships with the White House Council on Environmental Quality, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Land Trust Alliance, Defenders of Wildlife, University of Alaska Southeast, and Coral Restoration Foundation. Most recently, he was a Knauss Fellow in the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of the Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks. He also serves as Board President of the Linnea Foundation.

Outside of work, you’ll find him diving, running, skiing, or reading.

All lands are ancestral lands. I live in Bend, Oregon, the unceded ancestral lands of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, Siletz Indians, and Warm Springs and the Cayuse, Umatilla and Walla Walla Nations. I hope this land acknowledgment inspires others to stand in solidarity with Native nations.
