Following a letter from the Conservation Lands Foundation and other national groups urging the Biden administration to engage the public in a transparent process and conduct a thorough environmental analysis of ConocoPhillips’ proposed Willow oil and gas project in the Western Arctic, the administration announced today it has opened a 30-day comment period through March 9, 2022.
“America’s Western Arctic represents one of the most important fronts in the fight against climate change and there’s no question that protecting this area is critical for the Biden administration to achieve its goal of conserving at least 30% of U.S. lands and waters by 2030,” said Brian Sybert, executive director of Conservation Lands Foundation.
“Oil companies already have access to three million acres of the region, which is why transparency around the Willow project is so important and a welcome step. Unless the land receives protection, oil and gas development will decimate this critical ecosystem.”
