Anne Shields

Anne Shields is the Former Chief of Staff of the Department of the Interior and a Board Member for the Conservation Lands Foundation.

About Me

Anne Shields, a native Texan, came to Washington in 1963, and worked in government, politics and political campaigns before entering law school in 1974. She was an attorney at the Department of Justice for 14 years and transitioned to the Department of the Interior in the Clinton Administration, where she served as Chief of Staff to Secretary Bruce Babbitt.

After retiring in 2001, she began studying painting, first at the Corcoran School of Art and, more recently, at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop. She began working in watercolor but found the vibrancy of pastels to be more appealing and has left her watercolor brush behind for now.

Recently she wrote and illustrated two picture books for children, ages 4 through 7, which are available through Amazon. They are “Missing Pumpkin” and “SHOO!”

She has exhibited at the Hill Center, the Touchstone Gallery, and the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop.
